Ian Wright told ITV Sport that he is ‘a bit confused’ at the ‘harshness’ in which Gareth Southgate axed Liverpool defender Trent Alexander Arnold from his England squad.
The Highbury legend wants TAA to be told straight that he hans’t been picked because there are other players ‘better’ than him, even though he doesn’t agree with it.
In recent times, Liverpool’s academy product has been a regular for his country, but he was dropped for these current international fixtures.
Chelsea defender Reece James, Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker of Manchester City were all selected ahead of him.
And with Southgate citing TAA’s ‘lack of form’ as a reason for him to be dropped, Wright urged the truth to be told because there are out-of-form players who have still been picked by England.
“That’s the level of competition and you cannot argue with a Reece James and his emergence,” said Wright. “Even a James Justin before he got his injury, unfortunately for him.
“I think he probably would have got into this squad for these three games. But I am a bit confused with Gareth and the harshness in which he said this ‘because of the form’.
“We have seen England players in the squad who have still been picked on form. What we have seen Trent go through. He has had a meteoric rise with everything that he has done.
“But I think when the injuries started to come, players not playing with him then it affected his game. Midfield players not playing with him. Yes, there is a dip in form.
“But for him to be left out on form, when I have seen players picked for England who have been on bad form, it just a little harsh. Just say to him ‘you are not in my plans for what I want to do because I have got him, him and him and I think they can do it better’ rather than say ‘form’. I found that a little bit harsh.”

At every major tournament, there is always that surprise omission and it seems as though TAA might just fall into that basket.
But for Liverpool fans, they might not care that much because it means that TAA will be fresh for the new season if he doesn’t get picked.
Plus, if he doesn’t go to the Euros then it will add a little bit of spice and fight to his game for next season because he will have a serious point to prove.
