Sky Sports reported this week that Celtic were ‘closing in’ on a deal sign £2.5 million-rated defender Ben Davies.

The Preston North End centre-back seems to be on the Hoops’ radar and it looks like the Scottish Premiership champions are ‘close to reaching an agreement’.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon oversaw a 2-0 victory over Hamilton at Parkhead on Wednesday night.

And although he didn’t give much away in his post-match press conference, he did drop one significant hint.

Speaking via The Scottish Sun, Lennon did at least confirm that he was in the market for a central defender.

He said: “We need strength and depth in the defensive area and we are working away to bring one or two in. We may look at the right-back and central defensive positions.

“I will speak to Peter Lawwell. Will we spend? We’ll see. We haven’t been immune to this pandemic.”

Given how close Sky claim the Davies deal is, it is quite pertinent for the Celtic manager to confirm that a move for a central defender was in the offing.

Shane Duffy was signed on loan last summer, but the Irishman’s struggle, combined with Christopher Jullien’s long-term injury, means that Lennon would absolutely be wise to strengthen.

Will it be Davies? Well that remains to be seen, but all signs do point toward it.
