The Telegraph report that Newcastle are keen on the England international centre-back, as they weigh up transfer targets under their new owners.
Stones has endured a difficult campaign at City, where he has failed to play regularly for Pep Guardiola’s side.
And City fans are hopeful that Newcastle will come and take the 25-year-old off their hands.
If Stones was to arrive at Newcastle he would immediately be in competition with a number of other options for a first-team place.
Newcastle are well stocked at centre-back, but Stones is more comfortable on the ball than most of the Magpies’ current options.
If Newcastle are to spend big this summer and change managers, they may want to adopt a more possession-based approach, which Stones would be suited to.
Stones would also arrive at Newcastle with a point to prove, as questions have been asked of him this term, after he has made multiple errors.
