Stuart Pearce has claimed that he wants Newcastle United target, Jesse Lingard, to return to West Ham, as he told talkSPORT (25/01/22 at 8:40 am).

The West Ham coach claimed that he would be ‘delighted’ if the Manchester United star turned up at their doorstep before deadline day, but still admitted that he would be pleased if he earned game time elsewhere.

There has been talk for some while now that Newcastle are keen to sign Lingard before the window slams shut, as reported by the Mirror.

But, at this moment in time, Lingard, 29, is still in Man United colours and is with his teammates at their warm-weather training camp in Dubai.

The Athletic even reported that Lingard’s proposed move to Newcastle is on the verge of collapsing amid a disagreement over a loan fee Man United want for the player.

Pearce, who would have coached Lingard at the London Stadium last season and seen first-hand what he is like in training, shared that it’s a ‘real shame’ a player of the Englishman’s talents isn’t playing on a regular basis.

“There is no doubt that out there, at this moment in time, Jesse is a commodity that isn’t playing for his football club and would be of a benefit to a lot of clubs in the Premier League,” said Pearce.

“Ours is certainly one of them. Everyone is aware that we tried to get Jesse back again last summer and that would continue probably in this window as well.

“But that’s down to Jesse. He would decide, and most importantly, Manchester United will decide what his future is for the next six months.

“I always said that it’s a real shame that a player of that talent isn’t playing regularly – I will be delighted if he goes and plays, wherever he goes and plays. If he turns up at West Ham, then it will utopia.”

The issue for the Hammers is that they are fighting for a Champions League spot with Man United.

Therefore, it makes it much harder for them to secure Lingard again, even though he had an outstanding impact at the club last season.

Even if West Ham tried to purchase him on a permanent basis, they might find it difficult, so their recent success is now, unfortunately, turning against them.

But if Lingard does leave, and for his own good and his World Cup hopes he has to, then those who sign him up will add those extra points to their season.
