UFC fans were hoping to see Ilia Topuria defend his lightweight title in 2025, but he has delivered some disappointing news about his next fight.

Ilia Topuria became UFC lightweight champion after a dominant knockout win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 317, further cementing his status as one of the sport’s rising stars.

Having taken no damage in that bout, there was some expectation that ‘El Matador’ might return to action sooner rather than later to make his first title defence.

And with several contenders lining up for a shot at the belt, there is growing anticipation around who Topuria will face next, even though the official top challenger has not been named yet.

Even though many people believe Arman Tsarukyan is the clear top contender, Topuria has said he is not interested in that fight.

That made it seem like Justin Gaethje might be next in line, especially after he said he would retire if he did not get a title shot.

But at a recent WOW press conference, Topuria cast doubts on when his next fight will even happen.

“Well, I have no idea at all (when I will defend my title). The truth is, we are in (negotiations). We are in the middle of negotiating everything, adjusting the schedule for the remaining part of the year or next year, so I can’t give you a specific answer,” Topuria said.

When questioned about his next opponent, the Spanish star stated it would be none of Tsarukyan, Gaethje, or Paddy Pimblett.

Next opponent for Ilia Topuria: who is in line for the title shot?

While Topuria has indicated it will not be any of those three, there are not many other realistic options within the current lightweight rankings.

Max Holloway is the only other top-five contender coming off a win, but Topuria had already defeated him in their featherweight title fight last year.

Given the landscape, it feels almost certain that Tsarukyan or Gaethje will end up being his first opponent at 155 pounds.
