The Leicester City striker has been identified as a possible solution to Newcastle’s goalscoring struggles.
After missing out on Daniel Sturridge, who joined West Bromwich Albion on loan from Liverpool, Newcastle United must turn their attention elsewhere in their quest to sign a new striker.
According to The Mirror’s Live Transfer Blog (posted January 27, 21:23), Newcastle are interested in signing Kelechi Iheanacho from Leicester City.
Iheanacho has found playing time difficult to come by since he joined Leicester from Manchester City last summer – he has featured for just 191 minutes in the Premier League this season.
The 21-year-old has shown some encouraging signs of late, hitting braces in the FA Cup victories over Fleetwood Town and Peterborough United.
However, Iheanacho isn’t the proven goalscorer that Newcastle require, as demonstrated by the fact that he has often lacked consistency when performing in the Premier League.
If given regular playing time then there is a possibility that Iheanacho could start to score with greater regularity but at the moment signing him would be too big a risk for Newcastle to take.
Newcastle must act quickly to bring in a proven goalscorer otherwise their hopes of staying in the Premier League will diminish further but Iheanacho isn’t the right player for them to try and sign.
