Speaking on the ITV Football Show, Jose Enrique has spoken about Liverpool’s current attacking struggles, claiming that Sadio Mane’s underperformance has gone unnoticed.
The former Liverpool star has been watching the Reds closely this season, and he believes that while the front three is still scoring goals at a reasonable rate, they’ve not been playing as well as they once were.
“Their front three, yes they have been scoring goals, but actually if you watch the games, yeah at the end the most important thing is to score goals, but in terms of way they’ve been performing hasn’t been close to way they’ve been performing in the last few years,” Enrique said.
“Mane’s been unnoticed as well, Mane is actually my favourite player for Liverpool. Firmino I don’t know what’s going on with him.”
The ex-Newcastle star is absolutely right.
We hate to sound like a broken record, and it’s incredibly cliché, but the injuries at centre-half have really hampered the entire team, even up top.
The safety blanket of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez at the back allowed the Reds to play with a much higher line in the past, meaning that the entire team would play higher, and in-turn, the strikers press higher.
Liverpool have been underperforming as a whole, and while a lot of the criticism has fallen elsewhere, Enrique is right that Mane hasn’t been at his brilliant best this term.
Hopefully, we see the Senegalese star back firing sooner rather than later.
