‘If you ask me a month ago’: Ben Foster says Newcastle ace almost made him change his mind

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ben Foster has been discussing the England goalkeeping situation heading into the World Cup.

Having played for the likes of Manchester United, Watford and West Brom, Foster knows a thing or two about goalkeeping, and he’s weighed in on who should start for England in Qatar.

For the longest time, Foster has been an advocate of Jordan Pickford, but he says that he’s starting to have small doubts about the Everton man, stating that he’s been questioning whether or not Pickford should be dropped for Nick Pope who he says has been ‘flying’ for Newcastle.

Almost changed his mind

Foster toyed with the idea of starting Pope before stating he’d stick with Pickford.

“If you ask me a month ago who I would have had starting in goal I would have said Jordan Pickford without a doubt in my mind, but the last month has genuinely made me question this. Nick Pope has been flying for Newcastle, clean sheets like you wouldn’t believe, making saves left, right and centre. Aaron Ramsdale is sitting pretty at the top of the league and keeping clean sheets, while errors are creeping into Pickford’s game,” Pope said.

“However, I need my goalie to have experience which is why I’m going to stick to my guns and stay with Pickford. However, this one was closer than I wanted it to be.”

Dilemma

This is a dilemma that you don’t want to have heading into a World Cup.

In almost every other position you want to have some healthy competition, but when it comes to goalkeepers, you want to have full confidence in your set number one.

However, it’s impossible to truly make a case for Pickford being better or in better form than either Pickford or Pope at this moment in time.

Pickford has never let England down before, but there are doubts around the Everton man heading into this tournament.
