Gary Neville has claimed that if you are the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool then you will ‘fancy your chances’ of winning the Premier League title if you finish above Chelsea, as he told Super Sunday on Sky Sports.

Chelsea blitzed past their London rivals by scoring three goals on Sunday, 24 hours after Liverpool put the same number of goals past Crystal Palace and Pep Guardiola’s side recorded a goalless draw against Southampton.

Many expected, before a ball was kicked this season, that both Manchester clubs, the European champions and Liverpool will be in the title race.

Well, after five games, all four of those teams are sitting in the top five, with Graham Potter’s Brighton sitting in the Champions League places and sandwiched inbetween the heavyweights.

During his commentary stint for Sky, when Antonio Rudiger netted Chelsea’s third in stoppage-time, this is what Neville had to say about the Premier League title race.

“If you are Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool or any other team that has aspirations to win this title,” said Neville.

“Then you will fancy your chances if you finish above this Chelsea team because they look really, really good – it’s a statement and performance in the second half (by Chelsea against Spurs).”

Whilst the Reds may not have the squad depth of their rivals, they can, pound-for-pound, match them when it comes to their starting XI.

With Virgil van Dijk back in the XI and not even breaking a sweat, Mohamed Salah breaking records for fun, Sadio Mane back to his best and Fabinho bossing proceedings in the middle of the park.

Then it does put Liverpool firmly in the title race, not forgetting, unlike their old rivals from Manchester United, they have players who know what it takes to get over that dotted line.

Either way, it is currently setting up to be an enthralling title race, but there is still a long, long way to go yet.
