West Ham are reportedly interested in signing Augsburg right-back Daniel Opare?

West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Augsburg right-back Daniel Opare in January to hand Pablo Zabaleta some competition on the right side of defence.

The Daily Mail claim West Ham are set to rival Premier League sides Everton and Swansea for the 27-year-old, with his contract set to run out in the summer. The Bundesliga side are said to be willing to sell Opare for £3million in January.

The report states that Augsburg are willing to listen to offers for the Ghana international, as they do not want to lose him on a free in the summer and that has alerted West Ham.

New West Ham boss David Moyes is likely to be busy in the January transfer window as the Hammers continue to struggle at the bottom of the Premier League, where they remain in the relegation zone.

However, signing former Real Madrid defender Opare could spell the end of another Hammers defender’s spell at the London Stadium, as Sam Byram continues to struggle to overcome injury.

The former Leeds right-back is expected to be nearing a return from a thigh injury that he suffered at the start of November, adding to his multitude of problems since joining the east London side in January 2016.

The Leeds academy graduate is known for his tough-tackling style of play, as well as his willingness to get forward that saw him score 10 goals during his Leeds days.

But the 24-year-old’s career has taken a turn for the worse at West Ham, undergoing hamstring surgery, as well as suffering other muscle problems throughout his time in east London and is firmly considered second choice behind experienced defender Zabaleta.

Byram has managed just 22 senior appearances for the Hammers as he approaches two years at the club, and surely if Moyes does land Opare, Byram must leave on loan or permanently.
