Alan Shearer has stated that the in ‘dreamland’ Newcastle will be challenging for the Premier League title in five years time, as he told
¡Qué Golazo!.

The former striker did admit, however, from a realistic standpoint, it’s going to take Newcastle much longer to challenge on those fronts.

It has been a whirlwind month for the Toon Army faithful and one they won’t forget.

Their own dream, at the start of this month, would have been to have Mike Ashley out of the door, the Saudi’s in and Steve Bruce no longer in the dugout.

And perhaps to the surprise of many, here they are and they can now dream big as to which direction the club can go.

But Shearer shared why Newcastle will climb that ladder a lot slower than the likes of Man City, Chelsea and his title-winning Blackburn side did.

“If we are talking dreamland, then I see them challenging for the Premier League,” said Shearer.

“If I am talking realistically, then it might take a little longer than that to challenge at the top of the Premier League.

“We are talking about some giants of English football. Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United. They all have funds to stay there and to compete.

“But let’s not forget that I was part of a Blackburn side under Jack Walker that had financial clout and within three years we won the Premier League. I don’t see that happening with Newcastle. I see it taking longer than that for them to challenge. I think the threat of other clubs is more now than when we won it.”

Before anything can happen in the long-term, those in the boardroom need to look towards the present and the club’s current situation.

If Newcastle were in a position of comfort, then they could really stick their chest out and bring in a possible name that would get everyone’s attention.

But with a relegation dogfight on their hands, that big-name might just press pause on the remote and wait to see what happens, which then changes the club’s plans.

They might have to go for a short-term option, before thinking long-term, but that then raises the question as to who would come in knowing they will be given the boot as soon as they keep the club up?
