Ben Foster has made it clear that Leeds United were the better team during Watford’s 1-0 defeat at Elland Road on Saturday, as he told BBC Sport.

The Watford keeper stated that if his side equalised in the second half, then it would have had ‘papered over the cracks’ because Leeds were ‘very sharp’ and they ‘worked their socks off’.

This was a highly-pressured game for Leeds, because of their winless start, although Watford would have also seen it as a game where they should be securing three points.

But the newly-promoted side couldn’t live with Leeds’ blistering start, and in truth, they should have had more than the one goal that was scored by Diego Llorente.

Even though the Hornets were ‘very poor’ against the Whites, their man between the sticks was pretty blunt and straightforward in how things panned out in Yorkshire.

“I thought if we would have [equalised] it would have been papering over the cracks,” said Foster. “We were very poor today. We didn’t have a shot on target, so can’t expect to come away with anything.

“They were very sharp and worked their socks off but if you allow them to do that it’s going to be a long day. If that goal had been given it would have been very unjust to the overall picture.

“I think we’re a better team than what we are showing. We were very poor today – miles away from it. We haven’t had a shot on target and didn’t lay a glove on them.”

Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds go into the international break with a sigh of relief, more than anything else.

It was the perfect afternoon for them because it was the first three points of the season and a clean sheet to boot.

Given what can happen to teams in their second season in the Premier League, Leeds are now showing signs that they are not going to fall down that particular hole.

It also needs to be remembered that injuries and suspensions have also hit Bielsa’s players hard during this period.

And if that luck can be with them, when players return after the break, then it will be helpful for them to really get their engines going.
