Tottenham Hotspur defender Anton Walkes has been sent out on loan again, with the youngster to spend the rest of the season with League One side Portsmouth.

The deal represents the youngster’s second loan move away from the club after he previously spent time in the United States with Atlanta United, and he will be especially eager to impress.

Walkes is a versatile prospect – he is often deployed as a right-back but is also capable of playing as a centre-back or a defensive midfielder.

The 20-year-old has made just one competitive senior appearance for Tottenham so far, which came in the League Cup against Gillingham last season and knows that he faces a major battle in order to make the breakthrough at the club.

If Walkes doesn’t impress sufficiently during his loan with Portsmouth then it could represent the beginning of the end as far as his Tottenham career is concerned as it is now time for him to demonstrate that he is capable of performing to a high standard on a consistent basis.

Conversely, if Walkes seizes his opportunity then he could persuade Mauricio Pochettino to involve him in his plans at Tottenham next season in some capacity.

It seems clear, though, that if he struggles at Portsmouth Walkes will find it difficult to make the grade at Tottenham.
