The young goalkeeper has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.
According to a recent report from FotbollDirekt.se, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a close eye on IFK Gothenberg goalkeeper Pontus Dahlberg, and if Spurs want to strike an early deal for one of Sweden’s most promising young players they will surely have to agree to an immediate loan back.
At just 18, Dahlberg has years to improve, but having broken into the Gothenberg first-team last season, featuring 15 times in the process, he will not want to suddenly take a step backwards, making do with a place on the bench and a few cup appearances.
Tottenham are not weak in the goalkeeping department, with Hugo Lloris expected to remain for the long term and Michel Vorm a more than able deputy. However with the latter having only a year left on his contract, Spurs could soon be searching around for a new number two.
Assuming Vorm remains for the next 12 months, bringing Dahlberg to North London now would be detrimental to his development, even if it would allow him to train with Tottenham’s first-team stars week in, week out.
Instead, if Tottenham really are interested they should attempt to beat Arsenal to the punch by making a swift move for the teenager but agreeing to loan him back to his current club just as they did so effectively with Dele Alli.
That would allow Dahlberg to continue to learn his trade, hopefully flourishing in the process, and ensuring Tottenham have a worthy successor to Lloris when the time comes to integrate the youngster into the squad as a back-up for the Frenchman, rather than a third-choice stopper with little more than under-23 football to look forward to.
