According to the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are planning a fresh move for Barcelona’s Andre Gomes in January, but what could that mean for current Spurs midfielder Harry Winks?

After all, the 21-year-old is a brilliant young talent who has forced his way into the first-team fold and impressed with his composure and passing ability.

Gomes may be more experienced, but Tottenham have made a habit of giving youth a chance and being rewarded as a result, and Winks has not looked out of place whenever he has been given a chance, either from the outset or off the bench.

Gomes may play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and he may have more big-game nous than Winks, but the only way the latter is going to get that is if he is played.

What Tottenham really need is more quality out wide, not another central midfielder who is arguably no better than one they already have.

In time Winks has the potential to become Tottenham’s Xavi – he really is that good – and manager Mauricio Pochettino would be wise to ignore his ongoing pursuit of Gomes and put all his faith in a youngster already on the club’s books.
