Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has been discussing Newcastle United and their chances of finishing in the top four this season.

The Magpies are flying high right now, and they’re sitting pretty in the top four.

However, while the Tyneside club currently occupy one of the Champions League spots, they’re far from being favourites to make Europe’s top competition next season.

Merson thinks that Newcastle could really be in the mix if they win their next two games, and he says that if the Magpies beat Chelsea they may well go out and sign a few players to boost their top-four chances.

Merson’s prediction

Merson says that Newcastle will be busy in January if they manage to beat Chelsea.

“They’re riding at the moment and if they win their next two matches, they could give themselves a solid chance.

“They need to decide whether they need to invest in their squad in the January transfer window. If they beat Chelsea next week, I think Newcastle will buy a few players and go after that top-four spot.

“Newcastle are playing really well at the moment. They’ve gone eight Premier League games without a single defeat, and their 2-1 loss to Liverpool was due to a late goal. I don’t see anything but a Newcastle victory this weekend.”

If it ain’t broke

Merson says that Newcastle will go out and make signings in January if they beat Chelsea in a week’s time, but do they really need to?

At the moment, Newcastle’s team spirit is carrying them to an unbelievable position, but January additions could upset the apple cart.

As the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and while it may be tempting to go out and make signings in January, there are numerous pitfalls that Eddie Howe must be aware of.
