Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has, once again, been discussing Tottenham Hotspur and their interest in Ilya Zabarnyi.

The young centre-back has reportedly been on Spurs’ radar all summer long, and while Tottenham don’t necessarily need a new centre-half after signing Clement Lenglet on loan, Gold has suggested that a move for Zabarnyi could be on the cards if the opportunity arises.

The 19-year-old is an incredibly talented young player, but the ongoing situation with Ukrainian football makes this one very complicated.

What’s been said?

Gold spoke about Zabarnyi.

“It’s about opportunities. I’ve said before Zabarnyi, the Ukrainian centre-back, is someone they like. Whether he’s someone they come back to if the window of opportunity is there for him. It’s so rocky what’s happening with Ukrainian football right now, he’s a Dynamo Kyiv player, there are attempts to get them playing again and I have no idea how that works,” Gold said.

Complicated situation

This is a very complicated situation and not necessarily one that Spurs want to get themselves involved in.

A FIFA ruling has stated that players in Ukraine or Russia can suspend their contracts for one year and sign for another club on what is basically a one-year loan, so the opportunity is there for Spurs to go out and get Zabarnyi.

However, there are ethical dilemmas to take into account on that front, and at the age of just 19, Zabarnyi is more one for the future rather than a player you’d want to loan in for a year.

Whether or not Spurs find a way to do this deal remains to be seen, but this is certainly a complicated transfer that has a lot of moving parts involved.
