Speaking on the Robbie Fowler Podcast, Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on whether or not Liverpool can win the Champions League.
The former Reds star may be a bit biased in his view, but he believes that Liverpool shouldn’t be written off.
Carragher claims that if the draw goes well Liverpool could find themselves in a semi-final, and from there, it’s anyone’s game.
“They (Man City) are big favourites this season, but I think if the draw goes well for Liverpool, you could get into the semi-finals basically, and then as I say, you’re that close and it’s a cup competition,” Carragher said.
“The Champions League for me, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the best team in Europe if you win it, we were a million miles away from being the best team in Europe in 2005. Barcelona and Real Madrid over the last decade have been the best teams in Europe, and the same with Bayern Munich last season, but you have to remember it’s a cup competition and anything can happen.”
As much as Carragher may be biased. He’s right, anything can happen in a competition like this.
It’s cliché, but Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League winning side had no right to be lifting that trophy that year. They finished 5th in the Premier League that year and were way off the pace, but a bit of luck and some favourable draws along the way saw them crowned victorious in Istanbul.
With the Champions League final again returning to Turkey this year, perhaps history could repeat itself.
