Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has expressed his concern about Liverpool’s ability to compete at the very top this season due to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s African Cup of Nations commitments.

The Manchester United legend was previewing the season, and inevitably, talk turned towards Liverpool.

Ferdinand has his reservations about the Reds’ chances this term, stating that he thinks the African Cup of Nations will be a real problem for the Merseyside club.

What’s been said?

Ferdinand gave his view on Liverpool’s chances this term.

“Is it the African Cup of Nations this year as well? It’s African Nations as well, they’re going to miss Mane and Salah at some point as well. If that happens, wow, that’s huge. I think Liverpool, it’s a big season for them and I’m worried for Liverpool in a lot of ways, they’re relying on the same front three again,” Ferdinand said.

Signing needed

Ferdinand has every right to be worried about this.

Mane and Salah are two of the Reds’ best players, and while Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino should be able to hold down the fort, they could probably do with another attacker through the door.

Egypt and Senegal may go deep into the AFCON, so the Reds could be without their two star players for a month, and during that time they could conceivably lose points that end up costing them the title.

Liverpool need to figure out how they’re going to cope throughout this period.
