Paul Merson has controversially claimed that if Steve Bruce made Newcastle’s recent January signings, then there would have been ‘uproar’, as he told Sky Sports News (01/02/22 at 7:10 pm).
The Sky pundit thinks Newcastle’s January captures were ‘safe’ and there was no ‘x-factor’.
The likes of Bruno Guimarães, Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Chris Wood arrived last month.
Lyon superstar Guimarães was perhaps the standout purchase, whilst Trippier was also a statement of intent by the north east club.
But Merson thinks the viewpoint from the Newcastle fans would have been a lot different if Bruce was still in the dugout.
“If Steve Bruce had made them signings then there would have been uproar,” said Merson.
“There would have been uproar. Absolutely uproar. There is no X-factor. It’s safe.
“I’m not sure safe can get you out. I think they needed someone to come in and have a swing. At least one player.
“A Jesse Lingard, who gives you that X-factor. I just think it’s safe. If they went down, you wouldn’t be shocked.”
In regards to Newcastle needing an ‘x-factor’, they already have that in Allan Saint-Maximin, so another of that type is not needed.
Those in the St James’ Park boardroom would have loved Jesse Lingard, but if Manchester United are being difficult, then there is only so much rope Newcastle can pull.
The simple task for Newcastle was to make themselves better than their relegation rivals and they have done just that.
Now it’s up to Eddie Howe and his players to do their talking on the training ground and out on the pitch.
