Gazzetta Dello Sport have reported in recent days that Franck Kessie to Liverpool remains a possibility.
According to the Italian publication, Liverpool are still interested in the AC Milan midfielder.
The Reds could do with a player like Kessie because they lost Georginio Wijnaldum this past summer.
Before Lionel Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain, the French giants signing Wijnaldum was one of bargains of the window, given that he signed for them as a free transfer after Liverpool released him.
And if it is true that he’s wanted on Merseyside, Kessie could be the 2022 equivalent of Wijnaldum – a brilliant box-to-box midfielder who gets a big Bosman move to one of Europe’s elite.
Ideal replacement
That’s because the 24-year-old is out of contract at San Siro next summer and the report from Gazzetta included a line about how he has rejected their latest contract offer of £107,000 per week.
Going by actions, Kessie quite clearly does not want to stay at the Italian giants and what a bargain it would be for Liverpool if they could snap him up.
This is a midfield player who contributed to 20 goals in all competitions last season [scoring 14, setting up 6].
For context, Wijnaldum, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago scored five goals between them last sason.
And if Jurgen Klopp can sign a star like Kessie, for free, and a few years before the prime of his career, well it would be one hell of a good deal.
He would be the ideal replacement for the Netherlands international and although competition will be fierce if it transpires that he’s definitely leaving Milan for free, Liverpool can and should rate their chances, based on who they are.
