It’s no surprise that Liverpool are already being linked with signing central defenders in the summer transfer window.

It’s been a pretty rotten season for the reigning Premier League champions – who are eighth in the table in the final third of the campaign – and much of it stems from injuries to centre-backs.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been sidelined since October, while Joel Matip was also ruled out for the rest of the season in January.

Liverpool need centre-backs and if a report is true, they could be getting an absolute bargain this summer.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Anfield chief Michael Edwards is looking at Porto powerhouse Chancel Mbemba.

The 26-year-old proved himself a very promising Premier League defender during a previous stint with Newcastle United and now looks to be improving after a couple of strong seasons in Portugal.

Thing is, Liverpool could reportedly get him for only £13 million and what a blinding piece of business that would be.

At 26, Mbemba, who has 55 caps for Congo, still hasn’t hit the prime of his career and given his potential, this could be an absolute steal by Edwards.

Other clubs will certainly be interested in the big man – who has helped Porto to the last eight of the Champions League this season – but Liverpool have a huge pull and if they throw their hat in the ring, Mbemba will struggle to say no.
