According to the rumour mill, Arsenal have signed a new goalkeeper.

It isn’t official yet but, by the same token, there’s an extremely good chance of it happening.

ESPN reported last week that Arsenal had agreed a £7.4 million deal with New England Revolution to sign goalkeeper Matt Turner this summer.

And Turner himself effectively confirmed the transfer after a recent USA international, revealing that he doesn’t know what squad number he’ll be in North London after being asked by a Gunners supporter.

If this is true, and the 27-year-old really is bound for London Colney, then it means Arsenal have decided to offload Bernd Leno.

Finished

The 29-year-old is out of contract in 18 months and speculation mounted that he could join Newcastle during the January transfer window, though that looks unrealistic at this stage.

However, Turner is too accomplished to be the third-choice keeper at the Emirates Stadium and therefore if he joins, the assumption is that Edu and Mikel Arteta have concluded that the Germany international – a £22 million signing under Unai Emery – will be leaving.

Leno, who joined the Gunners in 2018, started the FA Cup defeat by Nottingham Forest earlier this month in what represented a rare outing, with Aaron Ramsdale taking over the number one role this season following a series of stellar performances.

With Arsenal only left to compete in the Premier League, Ramsdale is going to start every single one of the club;’s 17 remaining fixtures.

And that means that the defeat at the City Ground will probably represent Leno’s last-ever appearance for the Emirates Stadium outfit.
