Chelsea’s loss could be Liverpool’s gain in the case of Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentina World Cup winner has been heavily linked with transfers to both the Reds and Stamford Bridge, as covered by HITC Sport.
In recent weeks, Chelsea edged ahead of Liverpool amid speculation that the Blues were prepared to spend more than his £106 million release clause, just to secure his services.
However, don’t write off Jurgen Klopp’s side yet.
That’s because according to journalist Ben Jacobs, the move to Chelsea has hit the skids in a major way.
Jacobs revealed to Football Transfers today that the West Londoners verbally agreed to pay a certain amount for the 21-year-old Benfica midfielder and, when it came to officially bid, the offer was much lower.
He added that the Portuguese outfit have interpreted Chelsea’s interest as a waste of time and if you’re Liverpool, now is the time to strike.
More is lost from indecision than wrong decision and clearly Todd Boehly et al have reservations about paying so much for the player.
And that’s understandable because £106 million – his release clause – is a hefty sum.
But given that Liverpool – whose club-record expenditure on one player is £85 million for Darwin Nunez – do desperately need to revamp their midfield as soon as possible, well this could be the break that Jurgen Klopp has been waiting for.
He doesn’t appear to be going to Chelsea anymore and if you’re the Reds, you must see this as an opportunity because, right now, nobody else is at the table.
