Speculation is rife that Michael Edwards might be quitting Liverpool next summer.
The Reds’ director of football is out of contract in July and The Athletic reiterated this week that he won’t be signing a new one.
Edwards has been a roaring success during his time at Liverpool and if one transfer report is true, he could sign off in style.
According to Team Talk, the Anfield club are lining up an offer to sign Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele next summer.
And if that materialises, Liverpool will win the transfer window.
That’s because Dembele is a £97 million player who Edwards could land for free, with his contract at Camp Nou expiring in June.
As far as bargains go, no club is going to be able to match that if the France international winds up on Merseyside.
Some cynics will point to his injury record and they’d be right to.
But is that a reason to turn down the signing of Ousmane Dembele on a Bosman? Absolutely not.
Beyond his salary, which would be substantial, there is no risk for Liverpool in terms of transfer fee and therefore should be no hesitation on bringing him in, checkered injury history or not.
Edwards has masterminded more bargains for Jurgen Klopp than you can shake a stick at.
But as far as value goes, they might be all pale in comparison to this, should Dembele join Liverpool for free.
