One of the only good things to come out of this season for Arsenal is the emergence of Emile Smith Rowe.
The 20-year-old playmaker broke into the Gunners’ senior team in December and there’s no doubt that Smith Rowe has added an extra dimension to Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal, who sit ninth in the Premier League table with two games to play, are on course for their worst season in some 26 years.
But fans of the North London club will agree that Smith Rowe coming through represents a huge plus in an otherwise dreadful campaign under Arteta.
And if rumours are to be believed, Arsenal are about to make a very smart decision.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Thursday, the Emirates Stadium club will ‘soon’ confirm a new contract for the Hale End gem.
And if and when it happens, it’s a huge piece of good news.
That’s because Arsenal, as mentioned, haven’t been very good this season and one of the pitfalls of low team performance is your best players often get plucked from you by bigger fish.
As things stand, Smith Rowe hasn’t been linked to anybody but, with his contract expiring in two years, combined with his form over the past five months, the Gunners aren’t in a very strong position if somebody were to register an interest.
But with a three-year extension on the table, that safeguards Arsenal from losing a future star for much less than his potential suggests he’s worth and, at the same time, also indicates that the player is happy in North London.
Being one of their own, fans of the North Londoners don’t want to see Smith Rowe going anywhere for the foreseeable future and when this deal is announced, that isn’t something they have to worry about.
