There has been one hot topic of conversation about Liverpool this month, and that’s been about their need to sign a centre-back.
Indeed, there has barely been a day where pundits, fans or even Jurgen Klopp himself haven’t commented on Liverpool’s problems at centre-half, and still, the Reds are adamant that they won’t be signing anyone in that position this month.
Goal’s report on the situation once again reiterated that view, with the site claiming that sources within Anfield have told them they’re not willing to gamble financially on a short-term solution due to the fact they’re still counting the costs of their losses during the pandemic.
While not wanting to gamble financially as a football club is a good thing, we can’t help but feel that in this situation is a worrying one.
Getting a short-term fix at centre-back wouldn’t be that expensive, and it’s clearly something Jurgen Klopp wants.
Loan fees are usually minimal, and the Reds have even been offered a free transfer in the shape of Sokratis.
However, Goal now claim that insiders don’t want to take a financial gamble, and if this is true, the Reds’ problems may run much deeper than at centre-half.
We don’t have access to the club’s accounts, so we don’t have the clearest picture of their financial situation, but if they see a free agent signing or a short-term loan as a gamble, we have to wonder what the state of the club’s books is.

The pandemic has hit every club hard, just this week we’ve heard rumours of Barcelona going bankrupt, and it seems as though Liverpool may have also been hit hard by this.
It’s no surprise to see that Liverpool have taken a financial hit, after all, they’ve barely had fans in the ground over the past 12 months, but the hesitancy to bring a cheap short-term solution at centre-half should have alarm bells ringing.
What is even more worrying is that Liverpool’s poor run of form has seen them drop out of the top four, and if the Reds somehow fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, that could be another financial blow that they seemingly don’t need right now.
Liverpool do have a problem at centre-back, but it seems as though there may be even more pressing matters behind the scenes at Anfield.
