So far this season, Liverpool have endured many injuries in the midfield department, with Thiago one of the players to be most affected.

The Spain international suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw against Fulham, Liverpool’s first game of the season, and consequently missed the next five Premier League outings.

Thiago has since returned to full fitness, completing 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over Ajax, although he remains extremely fragile. At the age of 31, he cannot be overworked.

Therefore, a report from The Athletic – if true – is great news for Liverpool.

What’s the story?

Well, according to The Athletic, Thiago now seems certain to miss out on a place in Spain’s World Cup squad.

The Liverpool No.6 hasn’t played for his country since the European Championships in 2021, and has also been left out of the current international break by Luis Enrique.

With just weeks remaining until the tournament in Qatar, Thiago’s chances of earning a spot on the plane are certainly slim – to say the least.

While that may upset the Spaniard on a personal level, it is – selfishly – fantastic news for Jürgen Klopp.

Should The Athletic‘s report come true and Thiago is left out, it would give the Italy-born midfielder six weeks to rest, improve his durability and hopefully stay out of the treatment room for the remainder of the campaign.

Liverpool need Thiago

If the 2-1 win over Ajax told us anything, it is that Liverpool need Thiago – he is absolutely crucial.

Football under Klopp can sometimes become a bit of a basketball match when a midfield orchestrator like Thiago is missing.

The German’s style of play relies a lot on transitions, and things can fall apart without someone keeping possession ticking over in the middle of the park.

Fabinho is not a midfield orchestrator, far from it. Neither is Jordan Henderson, who is more of an engine in Klopp’s system with his impressive running statistics.

It was no surprise to see Liverpool improve with Thiago playing the entire 90 minutes against Ajax – hopefully, he can continue to start on a weekly basis throughout the 2022/23 campaign.
