According to a recent report from Diario Madridista, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Real Madrid fringe player Mariano Diaz this summer and the striker would be keen on a move. However, could the Spanish side’s insistence on a buyback clause scupper the deal before negotiations have even begun?

As reported by realmadridnews.com earlier this month, the European champions do not want to part company with the 23-year-old unless they have the chance to buy him back at a later date, much as they did with Alvaro Morata.

The Spanish international left the Bernabeu for Juventus in 2014 and his return of 27 goals and 19 assists ensured Real activated his buyback clause two years later.

It was a sensible move from Real, knowing Morata had the potential to make them regret his departure if they did not cater for that very eventuality, while also bringing him back for a cut-price fee knowing they could then sell him on for considerably more if they so wished.

In short, it was a win-win for the La Liga giants, and Tottenham are unlikely to want to see Diaz excel in North London only to be swept back to Spain after a year or two.

Of course that would be dependent on the player’s success, but Tottenham are not going to want to sign a dud, and the existence of a buyback clause means any success could ultimately have a bitter twist.

That may be the price English clubs pay when dealing with Real and Barcelona from now on, and it will be interesting to see if Tottenham are genuinely interested in the 23-year-old how happy they would be to accept his current club’s demands to get a deal over the line.
