If Rangers miss out on signing James McArthur from Crystal Palace should they consider Charlie Adam from Stoke City on a free transfer?

Rangers face competition for the signing of James McArthur, with the Daily Mail reporting Aston Villa and Cardiff City are also keen on the Crystal Palace midfielder.
Despite being the latest club to join the race, it seems that newly promoted Cardiff are now the favourites to land McArthur.

Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock, who has just lead the Welsh side to a surprise second place finish in the Championship, was the one who originally signed the 30-year-old for Palace back when he was boss there in 2014.
Villa’s move for McArthur, who is expected to be allowed to leave Selhurst Park despite having two years left on his contract, will depend on their own promotion from England’s second tier as they face Middlesbrough in the semi-finals of the playoffs.
New Gers chief Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, is not yet certain what sort of transfer budget he will be given this summer by the cash-strapped Scottish Premiership outfit.

Alternatives
If Gerrard does miss out on McArthur then should he perhaps consider a reunion with his former Liverpool teammate Charlie Adam?
Adam, who was a youth player at Ibrox and made 76 first team appearances for them before moving south of the border to Blackpool in 2009, is out of contract this summer at current side Stoke City.
Stoke have just been relegated from the top flight and therefore the Scotland international may be open to a move back home to play under Gerrard – whom he worked with for a year while at Anfield in 2011/12.
