Rangers have already brought two new centre-backs to Ibrox.
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is reportedly looking to sign a third centre-back this summer in the form of Millwall stopper Jake Cooper, with the club said to be confident in signing the 23-year-old.
The Daily Mail report that Rangers have activated a release clause in Cooper’s contract, which stands at £3million after an excellent campaign with the Lions under manager Neil Harris. The Sun claim Rangers are confident.
Cooper broke into the Millwall side early on and missed just one league game from October onwards due to a suspension, making 38 Championship appearances in which he scored four goals and laid on three assists.
The Gers have already landed Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic this summer and they are expected to act as the club’s new centre-back pairing, while Fabio Cardoso remains on the sidelines.
Aidan Wilson joins the Portuguese star in awaiting his chance to shine, after veteran Bruno Alves had his contract ripped up by the Gers and eventually joined Serie A side Parma this week.
Wilson, 19, made his Scottish Premiership debut under Pedro Caixinha in a 2-1 loss to Aberdeen in May 2017, but has managed only two senior appearances – the last coming in May 2017.
Now he has tasted first-team Scottish Premiership football, the next stage in Wilson’s development is to continue getting game time but the chances of that at Rangers are small.
If the Gers sign Cooper, Wilson will be pushed even further down the pecking order with Ross McCrorie also able to fill in at centre-back. It should convince both Gerrard and Wilson that a season-long loan is the only option.
