If promoted, Aston Villa should consider Spurs’ Vincent Janssen

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen to sell Vincent Janssen this summer, so should Aston Villa have a look?

While automatic-promotion looks to be an ambitious goal at this stage, Aston Villa still appear to have every chance of ending their Premier League exile this season with Steve Bruce’s side currently fourth in the table and six points off second place Fulham.

It is going to be an exciting end to the campaign, but the uncertainty will not help those at Villa Park whose job is putting together a list of potential summer targets – especially as staying in the Championship is surely likely to damage their chances of keeping the loanees who are currently so integral to their success.

One area that Bruce needs to, without question, strengthen at the end of the campaign is up front. Despite their success, only two players have reached double figures for league goals this term, and neither are forwards.

Scott Hogan is currently the top scoring striker. But with six goals to his name, Bruce would be forgiven for feeling that leaving his attacking options as they are could be a huge error – even if they do not go up.

So perhaps the Villans should consider a move for Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen during the summer after reports emerged from Turkish outlet Fotomac which suggested that Spurs want around £10 million for the Dutchman.

It has been a tough time for Janssen since he joined Spurs. He had to deal with being a somewhat peripheral figure during his first season with the Premier League side and has spent this season out on loan with Fenerbahce. Again, it has not been a particularly encouraging year.

Nevertheless, if Villa are promoted, they should consider asking to try and take Janssen on loan – and if that does not work, they should seriously have a look at whether they can agree a permanent deal.

Janssen was lethal in the year in the Eredivisie that earned him a move to White Hart Lane, scoring 27 goals in 34 league games, so perhaps Bruce should take a gamble in the hope that he can rediscover that form after a solid run in the team. If Janssen can become that goalscorer once again – he also boasts a decent record for The Netherlands – it may begin to look like a real masterstroke from Villa if they are the ones to take that chance. It is a major gamble though.
