If Pochettino sticks with three centre-backs it could be a Tottenham lifeline for Ben Davies

The Tottenham Hotspur player has done brilliantly in a back three for his country and Spurs recently adopted the same style.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino sprung something of a surprise last weekend when he opted to play three at the back for the North London derby against Arsenal.

It was a move that appeared to befuddle the opposition as they sought to change their game plan accordingly, and while Tottenham conceded an own-goal they held firm thereafter and looked solid against a significant attacking threat.

Whether Pochettino continues with that formation in the coming months remains to be seen, yet it could give a potential lifeline to a player who has struggled for game-time this season, and we are not talking about Kevin Wimmer.

The Austrian international did well overall against Arsenal – despite putting through his own net – but the switch to three central defenders could also see Ben Davies given more chances.

The Welsh international has done brilliantly in that position for his country, rather than his more usual role as a left-back, and given the need for additional strength in depth with three central defenders playing every match, Davies could be more important than ever.

For now he simply offers cover for Danny Rose in the full-back position, but if Pochettino sticks with the change, Davies will suddenly have two roles to act as back-up for.

If he gets the chance and excels as he has for his country, he could even make the position his own.

Still only 23, Davies has most of his career ahead of him and he is sure to seize any chance to play regularly for Tottenham in the years to come.

After Pochettino’s change of thinking, this could be that chance…
