Matz Sels has suggested that he hasn’t given up hope on his Newcastle United career.

Matz Sels has suggested to Voetbal that he does not consider his Newcastle United career finished, despite spending this season out on loan.

Sels failed to impress after being brought at Newcastle back in 2016, and he was subsequently loaned out to Anderlecht this season.

The Belgian was widely expected to move on this summer, but he has suggested that staying at St. James’ Park in a possibility.

“Newcastle is not a closed chapter for me,” the £5 million signing said. “I am still grateful to Rafael Benítez for having signed me.”

However, Sels’ chances of remaining at Newcastle look non-existent if Martin Dubravka is signed on a permanent deal.

Dubravka was brought in from Slavia Prague in the January transfer window, and he has made an immediate impact on Tyneside.

The Slovakian stopper has looked highly impressive during his appearance for Newcastle to date, and he has established himself as the Magpies’ number one.

Rafael Benitez’s side are now thought to be looking at making his loan move permanent now.

And if Dubravka does arrive, Newcastle’s goalkeeping options will look very strong.

The Magpies already have Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot and Freddie Woodman at the club to pick from, which means Sels’ chances of ever breaking back in at St. James’ Park look very limited.
