Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez blocked Sean Longstaff’s proposed move to Portsmouth earlier this summer.

Newcastle player Sean Longstaff looks on during a pre-season friendly match between Hull City and Newcastle United at KCOM Stadium on July 24, 2018 in Hull, England.

According to the Chronicle, Sean Longstaff could be allowed to leave Newcastle United this week, with Rafael Benitez considering doing a u-turn over the 22-year-old’s future.

Benitez blocked Longstaff’s proposed loan move to Portsmouth earlier this summer, as he felt that the youngster needed to stay at St. James’ Park.

However, the Spanish boss may be having second thoughts about Longstaff’s first-team chances now.

Despite an impressive pre-season, the Newcastle youngster is yet to make a competitive appearance this campaign.

And if he is to be made available on loan again, then Longstaff could have reason to be angry with Benitez.

Longstaff would surely have been better off leaving to join Portsmouth earlier this summer, if he is to be sent out on loan anyway.

Longstaff could have had the entire pre-season to get used to his new teammates, and force his way into their starting line-up.

But if Longstaff leaves now he will immediately be playing catch-up, and could have to spend time on the substitutes’ bench before breaking into the team, with the Football League season up and running.

And Longstaff could be forgiven for feeling frustrated if Benitez does let him go after all.
