According to a recent report from the Sun, Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Hull City defender Harry Maguire this summer, and if the Magpies get their man it would be a superb piece of business from manager Rafa Benitez.

Maguire is one of the best centre-backs in England right now, and he could become a Newcastle legend if he moves to St. James’ Park.

The 24-year-old is currently fighting a relegation battle with the Tigers, but whatever happens in that regard, Newcastle are said to be desperate to secure his signature this summer.

If Hull go down that could prove far more likely, and while there will be considerable competition for his signature, Newcastle would be making a real statement of intent if they can get a deal done in due course.

Benitez will understand the importance of significantly strengthening his side this summer and Maguire is exactly the kind of player he should be targeting.

He is young enough to improve further yet has the innate talent and the top flight experience to be an instant hit on Tyneside.

Newcastle may be back among the big boys, but signing the right players will be key to ensuring they remain there and challenge at the right end of the table sooner rather than later.
