Newcastle United and Southampton are both said to be interested in CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandr Golovin ahead of the summer window, which could see West Ham benefit.

Golovin, 21, is renowned as one of the most exciting midfield talents outside of Europe’s top leagues, as he continues to shine with the Russian giants with one of the country’s biggest sides.

His excellent form from attacking midfield and indeed, on occasion, in a deeper role has seen him play to a standard expected of a player well beyond his age. He has scored six times and provided five assists in 41 games.

Adding Golovin to Rafa Benitez’s side would be a major coup, one that could certainly take them from the expectation of relegation strugglers to top-half contenders. Agent Alexander Manyakov has told Sport.ru that the Toon are keen.

His quality on the ball, vision and eye for goal would give the Toon an added dimension going forward. But if the Magpies play Golovin, surely he is too similar to Jonjo Shelvey to play both stars?

Shelvey has impressed at the base of Newcastle’s midfield this season, but Golovin adds more. It could benefit West Ham, then, if they look to reignite their reported January interest in England international Shelvey.

The Daily Mirror claim West Ham wanted to sign Shelvey in January, despite the Daily Star claiming he earns huge wages of £70,000 a week. The signing of Golovin would surely help the Hammers if they were to reignite their interest.

Golovin boasts more potential and future value for money, leaving Shelvey further down the pecking order and the Hammers would find more joy if indeed the Toon land the Russian sensation.
