If Newcastle go down, Liverpool should raid them for Georginio Wijnaldum

Why Liverpool should make a move for Georginio Wijnaldum this summer if Newcastle are relegated.

The manner Newcastle United’s 5-1 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend was a serious setback in their fight against relegation, and an improvement is drastically needed if they are to survive.

Steve McClaren’s side are in 18th position in the Premier League and have been unable to kick on despite substantial investment in the summer and in January.

Relegation would leave their best players ripe for the picking, and none more so than winger Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum has gone from winning the Dutch title with PSV Eindhoven last year and winning their player of the season award ahead of Memphis Depay, to potentially playing in the English Championship – and would surely be keen on a move elsewhere.

One club who would be wise to take advantage if Newcastle slip to England’s second tier, would be Liverpool.

Wijnaldum has scored nine goals this season, more than any Liverpool midfielder, and more than half of the tally (15) the Reds midfield have netted combined.

Wijnaldum is a natural winger who could add width to the Liverpool team, an element lacking from their game this season with Jordon Ibe inconsistent and Raheem Sterling sold to Manchester City.

Adding him could help get the best out of faltering striker Christian Benteke or the excellent Daniel Sturridge if he could stay fit. The likes of Divock Origi, Danny Ings and even Mario Balotelli will all potentially be competing for places next season under Klopp, and Wijnaldum will benefit from a greater cast of options up front to cross to.

Newcastle paid £14.5 million to sign the Dutchman, and if they survive this season in the top flight, will be under no pressure to let him leave. Drop down a division, and it would become a lot harder to keep their top goalscorer, and even tough to sell at a profit, making him an intriguing option for interested clubs.
