The signing of Marvin Compper undoubtedly played a part in Brendan Rodgers’ transfer frustrations at Celtic.
The defender’s move from Red Bull Leipzig has been a bust, after he got injured in his first month at the club.
The 2018/19 season has been a different matter. Compper has been healthy, he has just been overlooked.
Compper slammed Rodgers in October, telling German newspaper BILD : “I’m fit and I train very well.
“Even my team-mates do not understand why I do not play.”
Compper was last seen in action for Celtic’s under-20 squad last week.
Rodgers’ exit could yet give him a reprieve.
The interim appointment of new boss Neil Lennon should in theory wipe the slate clean for all of Celtic’s players.
Lennon’s intention will not be to show Rodgers up, but if he gives Compper a chance and he shines, that’s exactly what he will do.
Compper is still under contract with Celtic through to 2020, and he could be useful early next season with Dedryck Boyata set to leave and Filip Benkovic’s loan set to expire.
It makes sense for Lennon to at least consider him, and see if Compper can seize his long awaited opportunity.
