If Mourinho wants to tempt Tottenham into taking Luke Shaw, first he has to play him

The Manchester United defender has been tipped to act as a makeweight in any deal for Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose.

As reported by the Independent, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keen to use Luke Shaw in any deal that brings Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose to Old Trafford, but the claim that Spurs are not interested in that prospect is no surprise given his lack of game time this season.

If the United boss wants to change Tottenham’s mind, he needs to start playing the young left-back, rather than hoping Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino simply remembers the player Shaw was prior to his horror injury under Louis van Gaal.

While Tottenham and their supporters are right to be wary of Shaw, there is no doubting his talent when he is fit and firing. The problem is, his lack of game time under Mourinho means any potential suitor has no idea what player they would be signing – the future superstar or the injury-prone risk.

United have plenty of matches coming up and they should be giving Shaw the run-outs that would show Tottenham why they should consider a swap-deal after all.

If Rose wants out of Spurs and Shaw can rediscover the form that earned him his £27million move (BBC) to United in the first place, it could actually be a switch that suits all parties.

However, for that to happen Pochettino and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will need to be convinced they are not signing a dud.

Still only 22, Shaw has years ahead of him in the game but, starting against CSKA Moscow this week, Mourinho needs to show Tottenham exactly what he is willing to offer.
