Tottenham Hotspur’s dream of winning the FA Cup ended on Saturday evening – and manager Mauricio Pochettino has big questions to answer about his starting line-up.
Spurs actually took the lead in Saturday’s semi-final against Manchester United, as Dele Alli opened the scoring, only for Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera to turn the game on its head and give United a 2-1 win.
It’s therefore another trophy-less season for Tottenham, meaning it’s now more than 10 years since Spurs last won silverware, and Pochettino has come under fire for some of his decisions.
The Argentinian once again decided to leave star defender Toby Alderweireld on the bench, whilst Hugo Lloris was left out in favour of backup goalkeeper Michel Vorm.
Whilst Lloris’ form hasn’t been great recently, Vorm’s display was questionable at best, and Herrera’s winner appeared to go through the Dutchman to give United the victory.
Vorm has been Tottenham’s regular FA Cup goalkeeper this season, but Pochettino’s decision will seem even stranger if the former Swansea City man leaves for free this summer.
Vorm’s contract expires this summer, meaning the 34-year-old could be on his way out anyway, and Saturday’s performance is likely to have been his final game for the club.
With no long-term future for Vorm, there were limited benefits from playing him against Manchester United, and Tottenham’s defeat may have been partly down to Pochettino picking Vorm over Lloris in a short-term choice with little upside.
