Manchester City tightened their grip at the top of the Premier League table with a 4-0 win against Newcastle United, with Joao Cancelo’s 27th-minute goal one of the highlights of the match.
The Portuguese international has been one of Europe’s best fullbacks this season, and after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s thunderbolt against Newcastle in midweek, Cancelo repeated the feat with a brilliant goal of his own.
It was the second goal of the afternoon after Cancelo’s defensive partner Ruben Dias opened the scoring five minutes in with a close-range header. Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling wrapped up the 4-0 win with two goals of their own in the second half.
With Chelsea and Liverpool both dropping points, it was the perfect Sunday for City, who head into Christmas top of the table and clear of their Merseyside rivals by three points.
Indeed, Cancelo’s form and ability to play both left and right-back has made him a mainstay in the City XI, a rarety given how much quality Pep Guardiola has at his disposal in every position of the squad.
The former Juventus star has already scored one world-class goal this season in the UEFA Champions League, yet Cancelo’s strike against Newcastle was arguably much more important given the other results this weekend.
