Joe Gomez is probably in the twilight of his Liverpool career.
In recent weeks, the 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a summer transfer away from Liverpool and truthfully, the speculation has substance.
Simply put, Gomez is not a big player for the Reds any longer.
This season, he has started six outings across all competitions – and only one in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp is set to start him against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup tonight but, if Liverpool lose, it could genuinely be Gomez’s last game for the Anfield outfit.
Early swansong
That’s because as his minutes suggest, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are miles ahead of him in Klopp’s pecking order.
And if Liverpool do bow out of the FA Cup this evening, there’ll be no other chance for the German manager to name a weakened XI.
Klopp’s side have Benfica in the Champions League quarter-final and a fascinating title race with Manchester City to consider.
After tonight, the Liverpool boss is going to be naming his best-possible XI in every game and, frankly, Gomez is nowhere near that any longer.
