Leeds United have been linked with the German stopper but they possess a young ‘keeper with outstanding ability who is ready to be the club’s number two.
According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Leeds United are moving closer to a deal for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald, but considering the 27-year-old’s less than impressive statistics in his homeland, what would his arrival mean for Bailey Peacock-Farrell?
The 20-year-old is one of Leeds’ most promising youngsters, and while he has only appeared once for the first-team to date, he would be forgiven for wondering what his future holds if he watches Wiedwald arrive in the coming days.
It is one thing seeing a quality addition arrive to challenge veteran Rob Green for a starting spot next season, and quite another watching a player who shipped 13 goals in his last three appearances for Bremen arrive to keep the youngster firmly ensconced as third choice at best.
Peacock-Farrell is not yet ready to start week in, week out for Leeds, but he could certainly act as back-up to Green next season.
Were Wiedwald to arrive, it would be with the aim of becoming the undisputed number one at Leeds, yet his arrival is unlikely to go down well with Peacock-Farrell, who could suddenly see his path to the first-team shut off for the foreesable future by a player who has not exactly justified the Whites’ interest.
It is a tough situation for Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen, who will understand the importance of strengthening in key areas.
The problem is, it may result in him losing a young stopper who has all the attributes to be a Leeds star for the next decade.
If he is not willing to be brave, making Peacock-Farrell his number two this season and seeing what he can do in the cup competitions, there may be nothing for it but to leave either this summer or next.
