Joe Cole has been the subject of quite a bit of stick of late, but he scored for Liverpool last night in the Europa League.

Joe Cole is a much maligned figure at Liverpool these days, and is widely expected to be moved on in January. However the midfielder is keen to fight for his place, and did himself no harm last night.

The attacker made one goal and scored another, his first for the club since April 2011. It gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead, even though they were eventually pegged back for a 2-2 draw.

He has underwhelmed on his few previous outings this season, mostly in the Europa League, so last night was a welcome sign he still has something to contribute.

Whether it was just a case of putting himself in the shop window, or whether it leads to a more meaningful contribution and salvation for his Liverpool career will be determined to try and build on it. It was at least a step in the right direction in either case.

There were a number of people whoever, who were wishing Cole hadn’t scored. The former England player has become such a figure of fun of late that a number of Twitter users had mocked him prior to and during the game, promising to do unlikely things if he scored.

Oops. Here’s a look at the unfortunate individuals who saw their jokes fire back in their faces…

@alexrobnewton: If Joe Cole scores tonight I will give everyone of my followers £5.

@hell0hannahp: If Joe Cole scores tonight i will eat my own arm.

@_connorm: If Joe Cole scores tonight I will give £100 to a random person on here

@jordansmith97: If Joe Cole scores 2 tonight I will set my balls on fire

@bobc1992: If Joe Cole scores tonight ill buy the Anfield stadium t shirt and wear it on every night out for the next 2 year

@rabdah11: If Joe Cole scores tonight I’ll wear a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and sandals to 6th form tomorrow!

and serial offender... @dancleverley: If Joe Cole scores, for everyone who RT’s i will buy you all tickets to a #LFC game / @dancleverley: If Joe Cole scores, everyone just tweet me abuse, i deserve it #lol

The situation was summed up by this Tweet after the game…

@gabriellax1990: haha bet people are regretting the ‘If Joe Cole scores tonight’ tweets loool

The poster who brazenly declared if people retweeted his comment and he would buy them all tickets to a game, found his comment retweeted more than 3,000 times after the game. Oops indeed.
