Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been speaking about the Ballon d’Or award and Mohamed Salah.

Salah was a player that was certainly in contention for the award this week. After all, he’s the top scorer and the top assister in the Premier League this season and he’s been exceptional for years.

However, Lionel Messi, somewhat controversially, won the award, and Wright believes there would have been a lot less controversy if Salah or even Robert Lewandowski had won the trophy.

What’s been said about Salah?

Wright was having a discussion about Salah and the Ballon d’Or.

“I thought Mo Salah deserved to win it really, I was shocked that he didn’t get top three at least,” Wright’s co-host said.

“I know, seventh, God, yeah. If it was Salah or Lewandowski, I don’t think anyone would have gone ‘oh my gosh’ Messi should have won it,” Wright replied.

Less controversial

Wright may be correct in saying that there would have been less controversy if Salah or Lewandowski had won the award, but that may not be indicative of who the best player in the world is right now.

Yes, Lewandowski and Salah have been unbelievable over the past 12 months, and they’ve started this season brilliantly, but as we should all know by now, you should never ever write off Lionel Messi.

Messi still scored over 40 goals in 2021, while he’s continuing to prove that he’s also amongst the best playmakers on the planet, while nobody else can dribble quite like the Argentine.

It is quite boring to see Messi winning his seventh award, but, in our view, it shouldn’t be such a controversial decision.
