Richard Keys has suggested Liverpool should have complained about Chelsea’s late substitution of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Liverpool and the West Londoners played out an enthralling 0-0 draw over the course of two hours in Sunday’s League Cup final at Wembley.
Chelsea manger Thomas Tuchel subbed on his Spainsh goalkeeper just before extra time finished, with Kepa being something of a penalty specialist.
And former Sky Sports presenter Keys has suggested on Twitter that the Reds should have objected against the substitution:
Ironic
Ironically, it was the 27-year-old keeper that wound up missing the decisive penalty.
Kepa failed to save any of Liverpool’s first 11 penalties during the shootout, including the penultimate one from fellow stopper Caomihin Kelleher.
The Chelsea man had to score to keep the shootout rolling but blazed well over the crossbar.
Still, you can’t really fault Tuchel’s logic, even if Edouard Mendy was the best player on the pitch prior to going off.
The Londoners have won three penalty shootouts this season and the former Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper had been between the sticks for all three.
On this occasion, however, it was fourth time unlucky as Liverpool – eventually – were crowned Carabao Cup winners.
