Paul Merson has stated that he would be ‘disappointed’ if he was a Liverpool fan and Mo Salah wasn’t offered a new contract, as he told Sky Sports (12/03/22 at 12:10 pm).
The Sky pundit added that if Salah were to leave Liverpool, then they would have to rely more on their midfield for goals.
As things stand, Salah is not putting ink to paper and extending his stay on Merseyside.
Salah’s contract at Liverpool will expire in 2023 and there is a fear that he will be heading for the exit door in the summer.
After the 29-year-old’s agent reacted with laughing emojis to Jurgen Klopp’s comments about the ball being in Salah’s court, Merson issued this response to the player’s current situation.
“If Salah went, then they would have to look into the midfield for a lot more goals,” said Merson.
“That’s where you are asking Henderson, Fabinho, I know Harvey Elliott is a good player, and that night come. But Thiago, they aren’t goalscorers and that’s the problem.
“If I am Liverpool fan, then I would be disappointed if they didn’t give Salah what he wanted. It has taken them 30 years to get to (being English champions).
“You have to remember, they were dominant in football. It has taken them all this time to get back up there and now they are a major force. You can’t let one of the best players in the world (leave).”
Over the weekend, Salah netted his 20th Premier League goal of the season – the fourth campaign in a row that he has hit such a feat.
The Egypt international did go off injured, but it shouldn’t worry the Liverpool faithful too much because he did walk off, with a smile on his face and then proceeded to give his shirt to a Brighton fan.
But, as the Reds push for every trophy the season, all the talk will still surround Salah and his contract.
On one hand, Liverpool are stubborn in how they offer contracts to players and they clearly aren’t willing to break that structure for anybody.
Whatever happens, if Salah does leave, then it’s something they will be hoping doesn’t come back to bite them in the back.
