‘If I was Edu’: Jenas says Arsenal need to sign someone in ‘very important’ player’s position

Speaking on Vibe With Five, Jermaine Jenas has been discussing Thomas Partey and Arsenal’s need to improve their midfield depth options.

The Ghanaian made headlines at the weekend with his wonderful opening goal in the north London derby, and while Partey was arguably Man of the Match against Spurs, Jenas says that he’d be signing a player in his position if he was in charge at the Emirates.

Indeed, Jenas says that Partey isn’t a player you can rely on, and if things start to go south in terms of injuries and suspensions, things could change very quickly at Arsenal.

Partey isn’t reliable

Jenas gave his verdict on Partey.

“You can’t rely on him, you can’t rely on him. If I was Edu that’s the first position I’d go for in January or in the summer, because you can’t rely on him. He’s very important and you see a difference when he’s in there, but like we say, when this starts to crumble, that position, Jesus for Nketiah, Fabio Vieira, that’s a different game,” Jenas said.

Already seen it

We’ve already seen last season that an injury to Partey can derail Arsenal – it was a huge reason why they dropped out of the top four last term.

However, while the Gunners could do with more depth, they’re in a better position now than they were last year.

Oleksandr Zinchenko may be more of a left-back these days, but he can also play in midfield, so the depth in that area isn’t as bad as it once was.

Whether or not you can rely on Partey remains to be seen. His injury record is chequered, but the same could’ve been said about Kevin De Bruyne at one point and he’s been arguably the single most reliable footballer in the Premier League over the past few years.
