Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Tottenham Hotspur fans should be disappointed with head coach Jose Mourinho.
Spurs go to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon and defeat would mean Mourinho’s side are nine points adrift in the race for Champions League qualification.
To put that into context, Tottenham were top of the Premier League table only two months ago but now there’s a 20-point gap between themselves and leaders Manchester City, who thumped them 3-0 last week.
The fact that the Lilywhites have gone from Premier League title challengers to ninth in the Premier League illustrates their decline over the past two months.
And it’s a drop-off that Merson can’t quite get his head around.
He wrote: “If I was a Tottenham fan I’d be disappointed. They were top of the league this season. Now they’re 20 points behind!”
Merson is right and a lot of Tottenham fans are gravitating toward a ‘Mourinho out’ stance.
That being said, the North Londoners have the chance to end a 13-year trophy drought under the Portuguese, whose side face Manchester City in the final of a League Cup in April.
But winning that alone wouldn’t be enough to save Mourinho in North London if Spurs fail to win the Europa League or finish in the top four.
